On the Kapalama Campus of Kamehameha Schools is the Kunuiakea Stadium. Although the Stadium is slightly over a decade old, it has been plagued with water penetration and damage to its structural components. In July 2011, Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI), along with a specialized team of consultants, was commissioned to investigate the causes of the water penetration and to develop a strategy to repair and eliminate any further damage.
Through a series of investigative site visits at the Stadium, UAI prepared a detailed report that analyzed the likely sources of the water penetrations that were causing structural and cosmetic damage. UAI’s investigative report determined the extent and severity of the water damage on the Stadium seating areas, overhead trellis, and large retaining walls around the Stadium. The investigative report documented existing leak issues and locations; provided repair options and probable costs for options; and concluded with the UAI design team’s recommendations.
After finalizing the recommended repair option and the development of the project budget, UAI’s design team prepared construction documents and specifications setting forth the detailed requirements of the repair of the Stadium.
