The Chaminade Silverswords, the University’s athletics program, compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level as a member of the Pacific West Conference. In 2015, Chaminade University of Honolulu (CUH) received a grant to help fund the construction of a new athletics locker and training room. The new facilities replace and significantly expand the existing facilities, provide contemporary locker rooms and sports medicine support for Chaminade’s student athletes, and improve accommodations for visiting teams and game officials.
Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI) facilitated a program charrette and worked collaboratively with CUH stakeholders – Athletic Director, Trainer, Dean of Students, Facilities Manager, and VP of Finance & Facilities – to program the new facility to ensure that the desired amenities would be constructed within budget.
UAI then proceeded into conceptual/schematic design utilizing the final program document. The design of the new 5,000 s.f. facility accommodates home and visitor locker rooms for both men and women, an officials locker room, trainers room, laundry/equipment room, and storage rooms. A breezeway connects the campus with the existing McCabe Gym.
Building massing and site orientation were carefully selected in order to promote cross ventilation, maximize natural daylight and photovoltaic energy.
