Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI) and Robert M. Kaya Builders, Inc. teamed together on a design-build project for REI Food Service, LLC, owners of the award-winning chain of Gyotaku Japanese Restaurants. The project, which entailed a 3,950 s.f. renovation of the former Sizzler’s Restaurant in the Aikahi Park Shopping Center, became the new home of the fourth Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant in Hawaii.
The project included the construction of a new kitchen, seating area, and cashier station within the dining area; converting an existing office into a single-user ADA restroom (new plumbing/ventilation), and refinishing and replumbing the existing restrooms. The design also included a new office, storage area, and bus station near the kitchen and provided a new grease interceptor at the right side of the building.
