The Dr. Francis F.C. Wong Memorial Stadium is a community facility utilized by various athletic teams and community organizations. In 2018, Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI) was contracted by the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation to identify and remove architectural barriers throughout the site and facilities in order to comply with current accessibility standards.
UAI’s scope of work includes providing a new roof structure at the interior of the main public entrance; removing two mechanical accessible lifts and providing new accessible routes linking the main entrance to both main floors; replacing the aluminum bleachers at either side of the main seating area with new covered ADA-compliant aluminum bleachers; repairing cracks and spalled conditions in the concrete floor surfaces of the grandstand; providing new non-slip coating over the walkways in the seating area; renovating both press boxes at the grandstand area; and addressing other ADA barriers within the stairs, batting cage, restrooms, locker rooms, and first aid official scorer’s room.
The project also includes relocating the baseball monument to the existing lanai; providing a new concession area in the main public entrance; and removing and replacing the chain-link fabric backstop screen with a new one.
