Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI) was contracted to provide air conditioning design for all 52 student dorm rooms and 10 resident advisor apartments at Kaha‘opulani Hale (Building 54) and Nae‘ole Hale (Building 55) on Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus. The project included a site investigation to evaluate the existing conditions, dimensions, ceiling space, and other field conditions that would affect the new design.
The project involved demolition of existing wall and ceiling finishes to accommodate the HVAC system and its controls. New air conditioning fan coil units were installed in the dorm rooms, dormitory advisor apartments, and communications rooms. Existing operable window manual levers were replaced with new custodial locks in the dorms. A new EMCS system was installed in both dormitories, with the existing EMCS equipment being replaced throughout the Middle School campus. New air-cooled chillers were installed and an existing water source heat pump was removed at the Middle School chiller plant building. Patching and painting of gypsum board walls and ceilings that were affected by the HVAC installation were done.
Lastly, the clothes dryer exhaust systems were replaced at the third floor laundry room in each dormitory, to correct issues with the units clogging the exhaust ductwork and maintenance personnel not having adequate access to the ductwork to service and maintain the system.
