The County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation was developing a regional park on a parcel of land previously owned by Parker Ranch. Akinaka & Associates, Ltd., the prime consultant for Phase 1 of this project, contracted with Ushijima Architects, Inc. (UAI) to design site access, sports fields, a covered play court facility, maintenance building, and comfort station. UAI spent a considerable amount of time meeting with the community and the County to define the architectural vernacular of these buildings especially given the immense size of the covered play court facility.
Design of site access consisted of providing accessible ramps and walkways as required within Phase 1. The sports fields scope consisted of providing pre-fabricated bleachers for the new football/soccer/rugby field and providing new home/visitors dugouts and a scorer’s booth for the new softball/little league level baseball field.
The 34,309 sq. ft. new covered play court facility incorporates three separate courts to accommodate high school basketball, volleyball, and tennis with moveable bleachers. Each court includes ceiling-mounted basketball backboards, rims, and nets; removable floor-mounted volleyball and tennis standards, nets, and supports with removable cover plates and recessed stanchion sleeves; and wall-mounted scoreboards. The building also includes a raised tile system flooring over concrete subfloor. Auxiliary spaces include equipment and sports team storage rooms; a Department of Parks and Recreation staff office; concession stand; men’s, women’s, and family restrooms; electrical room; and janitorial room.
The 1,584 sq. ft. maintenance building design included two large storage rooms with roll-up doors; an office/break room with ceiling fans; unisex, single-user restroom; and eye wash/shower station. The 1,155 sq. ft. comfort station design included men’s and women’s restrooms; a janitorial/storage room; covered entry; electrical room; and securable gate entrances.
The entire project was designed and permitted. However, due to budget constraints, only the covered play court was constructed.
Status: Completed in 2016
